Paying by the job or by the route stage

Which one source pays each workstream's work, and what a completed job or a route stage pays.

Measured work pays by the unit through piece rates. Some work is paid another way: a fixed amount when a job is completed, or so much a metre when a route job reaches a stage. Pay › Job and stage rates sets both.

You need the Manage pay rates permission and the Crew plan: job and stage rates are part of contractor pay.

One source pays each workstream

Every active workstream is listed with Pays by beside it. Pick one:

  • Measures, by the unit — approved measure lines pay at their item's piece rate. This is where every workstream starts.
  • Route stages reached — each route job pays when it reaches a stage you have put a rate on. Only offered on a route workstream.
  • Completed jobs — each job pays once, when it is completed.
  • Nothing by the unit — the work is paid for its hours or days only.

It is one source, never two. A route job measured for the client and completed would otherwise pay its contractor for the same work twice. Measures on a workstream that pays by completion still go on the client's invoice; they just don't pay the contractor.

If you change a workstream's source part-way through a job, work already paid is not paid again another way. The contractor ledger shows the job's other lines as Already paid another way.

Paying per completed job

With Completed jobs chosen, the workstream shows Per completed job. Press Set:

  • Who this rate is for — Every contractor, or Chosen people.
  • Pays, per completed job — the amount.

A job pays when it reaches a done status, and counts in the pay period of the day it was completed. A completed job reopened before it is paid leaves the ledger, and counts again from when it is next completed.

Paying per route stage

With Route stages reached chosen, each of the workstream's in-progress and done statuses is listed as a stage. Press Set on a stage:

  • Who this rate is for — Every contractor, or Chosen people.
  • Quantity — a route job has no quantity of its own, so pick the number column the stage is priced on, such as Per metres, or Once per route.
  • Pays, per — the amount for each unit of that column, or for each route.

A route job reaches a stage when its status is set to that stage, or to any later one: a route set straight to Cabled was dug on the way. A stage counts in the pay period of the day it was reached, and it is reached once. Moving a route back doesn't undo it; if a stage was set in error, hold or dispute it on the contractor ledger.

A route job whose quantity column is empty or zero pays nothing for that stage until it is filled. The ledger shows it as No quantity on the route.

Every contractor, or chosen people

Every contractor means everybody classed as a contractor, and everybody a subcontractor company supplies. An employee on the same crew is paid for their hours, not per job as well. To pay an employee per job on purpose, give them a rate of their own.

Chosen people gives each person you tick a rate of their own. Search people finds them and Tick shown ticks everyone the search shows; anybody who already has a rate of their own has it shown beside their name. With several ticked, the button reads Save for N people and gives them all the same figure. If they are on different rates now, the amount box starts empty and reads Different rates now.

Empty is not zero

Clear the amount and the button becomes Remove the rate, or Remove for N people with several ticked. Empty means nobody has decided, so the work pays nothing. Zero is a decision that it is worth nothing.

Who earns it

A job or stage is earned by the job's published assignee. If a crew of several people is on the job and they are one gang, the gang's leader earns it and the split is recorded on the run. Anything else is credited to nobody until somebody says who earned it, on the contractor ledger.
