Language versions of Binder documents

Add your own translations of a document, a page, a link or a signed declaration, so people read it in the language they chose.

Some of your people read better in another language. You can add your own translation of a Binder item, and of the declaration in an induction's Sign step. Maliru never translates anything itself: every language version is one you write or upload.

Add a language to a document

Open the item and go to Languages. Choose Add a language, pick the Language, and add the content in the item's own form:

  • for a file, choose the File in this language;
  • for a page, write it in the page editor, with the preview beside it;
  • for a link, enter the Web address in this language, such as the same video in another language.

Then Save. The tab lists each language you have added, with Open, Replace and Remove.

Who reads which

People read the version in their own language (Me › Language) when it has one here, and as published otherwise.

A person who has chosen a language under Me › Language on their phone opens that language's version automatically. Everybody else reads it as you published it, including people whose app simply follows their phone's language. See Choosing your language on the phone.

On the phone, a document with language versions shows a row of choices above it: Original, and each language by its own name, such as Español. Anybody can switch between them, whatever their setting. A file opens in the language chosen.

In the office, the Binder shows the version as published.

Confirming counts for the version

A must-read is confirmed for the version, whatever language it was read in. The read report shows who confirmed which version, not which language they read it in.

Removing a translation does not undo anything: People who read in that language will read it as published. Their confirmations are kept: they count against the version.

Titles stay as you typed them

Folder names, item titles and descriptions are shown exactly as you typed them, in every language. Only the content has language versions. Choose titles everybody will recognise, or put two languages in the title.

After a new version

A translation belongs to one version of an item. A new version starts with none: For version 3. A new version starts with no translations. After you publish one, the Languages tab says which version the last translations were for, for example Translations are for version 2; add them again for this version. Until you do, everybody reads the new version as published.

That is true of a minor change as well: even a typo fix starts a version with no translations, so add them again afterwards.

A sign declaration in other languages

In an induction's Sign step, under What they sign, In other languages › Add a language opens a box for each language you add. People whose language is not here read and sign it as written.

A person who has chosen that language reads the declaration in it, and signs it in it. Their record keeps the exact words they signed.

Changing a declaration's translation does not change the step, so nobody has to do it again. Changing the declaration itself does: see Inductions for how a published change is rolled out.
