Videos in the Binder: links and uploads

Play YouTube and Vimeo links inside the app, or upload your own videos, which Maliru compresses so they stream smoothly on a phone.

Training videos can go in the Binder in two ways: as a link to YouTube or Vimeo, or uploaded to Maliru.

Links to YouTube and Vimeo

Choose New link and paste the address. Under it, a YouTube or Vimeo address says YouTube video. Plays inside the app. (or Vimeo), and it plays inside the Maliru app on people's phones. In the office, Open opens it in a new tab. Any other address Opens in the browser, including a video on another site.

Upload a video

Choose Upload and pick the file, as for any document. The Binder takes MP4, MOV and WebM videos up to 1 GB each. Any other kind is refused: Upload it as MP4, MOV or WebM.

Before anything is sent, Maliru checks your plan has room for it, for example: This video is 840 MB and the workspace has 300 MB left. A large upload says how big it is while it goes up.

Compressed, quality first

Every uploaded video is compressed on Maliru's servers once it is in, so it streams smoothly on a phone. The aim is the smallest file that looks the same as yours on a phone or a laptop, not the smallest file at any cost:

  • a video keeps its own resolution up to full HD (1080p); a 4K video becomes 1080p, and a smaller one is never enlarged;
  • a video filmed upright stays upright;
  • 60 frames a second becomes 30, which roughly halves the size of phone footage without visible loss;
  • iPhone HDR footage is converted so it does not look washed out on other screens;
  • playback starts before the whole file has arrived.

A video is never made bigger or worse. If compressing would not make it noticeably smaller, Maliru keeps your upload as it was.

Processing

Uploaded videos show Processing until they are ready. Until then only the office sees the video, and Tell people waits too. When you publish a new version of a video people already watch, the current version stays live until the new one is ready: Version 2 is processing — Version 1 stays live until it is ready.

When it is ready, the table and the item show the result, such as Compressed from 840 MB to 160 MB, or Kept as uploaded (95 MB).

Video processing has to be switched on for your workspace's platform before uploads can finish. If a video reads Processing · Waiting for video processing to be switched on., it is waiting for that. Nothing is lost: the video finishes once processing is on. Contact Maliru support if it stays that way.

If a video cannot be prepared, it says why, for example This file could not be read as a video. Upload it again as an MP4, MOV or WebM file., and whoever uploaded it gets a notification. Their upload is kept, and so is any earlier version.

Watching on the phone

An uploaded video shows a still with a play button. On Wi-Fi it plays straight away. On mobile data Maliru asks first: Play on mobile data? — This video is 160 MB. Playing it uses your mobile data. — with Play or Not now. The player has play and pause, a slider and Full screen.

Keep on this phone saves a video only over Wi-Fi: Connect to Wi-Fi to keep this video. In a folder kept on the phone, videos wait until the phone is next on Wi-Fi: Videos are saved on this phone once you're on Wi-Fi. A kept video plays without signal.

Maliru records how far each person has watched each version. In an induction, a Watch step uses that to know when somebody has reached the end. See Doing an induction on your phone.

Storage

Uploaded videos count against your plan's storage, like every file. While a video is processing, your plan needs room for it as uploaded; once it is compressed, only the compressed copy counts. See Storage: what counts and when it is full.
