Running a classroom induction
Book sessions, invite people, and take attendance on the trainer's phone: ticks, a check-in code, a signature or the paper sheet.
Many inductions happen in a room or on a site walk. Maliru books the session, takes attendance, and counts it towards each person's induction.
Set the induction up
Set Delivered to In person or Both, and add an Attend step: The step is done when the trainer marks them present at a session of this induction, or they check in with its code. An induction that only happens in a room can be a single Attend step: book it, take attendance, and the credential is issued. See Inductions.
Book a session
Choose New session on the Binder's Sessions tab, or on the induction's own Sessions tab. The induction must be published. Then fill in:
- the Induction, the Day, and when it Starts and Ends;
- Where: A site, or Somewhere else, written in;
- the Trainer: They take attendance for this session. A trainer needs no special permission;
- Capacity, if there is a limit;
- Invite: From the enrolled list, or Anyone. Anyone not enrolled yet is enrolled when the session is booked.
Then Book session. Everyone invited is told the time and place, and their induction shows Your session with when, where and who runs it.
Open a session in the list to see who is invited and who came, Invite people, Change it, or Cancel session. Moving it to another time or place tells everyone invited the new details, and a new trainer is told they are running it. Cancelling tells everyone invited; they stay enrolled in the induction.
The trainer's phone
On the day, the trainer sees 1 induction session to run today on Today. Their sessions are also in the Binder, under Inductions › Sessions you run. A session lists the people invited, each with a tick box, and counts them, such as 6 of 8 present. There are four ways to take attendance:
- Tick each person who is there.
- Show check-in code puts a QR code on the trainer's screen. People open their induction, tap Check in and scan it. It changes every 30 seconds, and works only on the day of the session. The person's location is noted at that moment, and only then.
- Pass the phone to sign: choose Who is signing?, hand the phone over, and they sign to say they attended the induction today. Signed. They are marked present.
- Photo of paper sheet files a photo of a signed sheet with the session as evidence. It does not mark anybody present by itself.
Ticks, signatures and photos taken without signal are kept on the trainer's phone and sent when it reconnects. A check-in by code needs signal on the person's phone; without it they see Checking in needs signal. Ask your trainer to tick you present. The trainer's list is the record.
The session's trainer takes attendance on the phone. Anyone with the Binder permission can also take it from the session in the office, on any session: tick people present or absent, add a walk-in, or file a photo of the paper sheet. Whoever marks somebody is recorded. The check-in code stays on the trainer's phone.
Being marked present completes the Attend step, whichever step the person is on. Marking somebody absent undoes it while their induction is still open.
Walk-ins
Add a walk-in records somebody with no Maliru account, such as a visitor or a subcontractor's worker, by Name and Company, and marks them present (Add and mark present). If they already did the online part of the induction on a shared link under the same name, the walk-in completes it. The trainer adds walk-ins on the phone; anyone with the Binder permission can also add them from the session in the office. See Inductions for visitors and subcontractors.
Sign-off by an assessor
A Sign-off step is for something seen in person, such as using a piece of equipment safely. In the step, choose who may sign it off: Their manager (Whoever the person reports to.), Chosen people, or A Smart Group (Anyone in the group may sign it off.).
When the person reaches the step, the assessor is told that somebody is waiting for their sign-off, and Today shows 1 induction step to sign off. They open the person's induction, choose Sign off, confirm they saw the person complete the step, and can add a note. Their name goes on the record.
Nobody can sign off their own step. A visitor has no manager, so a visitor's sign-off is signed in the office, from their progress, by somebody with the Binder permission.
