Applications for payment: from a valuation or from measures
Raise the application your client pays against, from a valuation or from approved measures.
An application for payment is the document a contractor sends to claim for work done under a contract. Maliru raises one of two ways:
- From a valuation — the usual route on a contract with retention. The application carries the valuation's lines and prints the cumulative position: gross to date, previously applied, retention held.
- From measures — a straight claim for the approved measures you tick, raised exactly like an invoice with the type set to Application for payment.
Either way it is a document on Commercial › Invoices, numbered in its own sequence (APP- to start with), and it is issued, sent, paid, voided and credited like an invoice. You need Manage commercial. Applications for payment are on the Crew plan and above; applications already issued stay readable on any plan.
From a valuation
Open the valuation on Commercial › Valuations and choose Create application in its footer. The draft application opens straight away; its Activity reads Raised from a valuation.

The draft is built from the valuation, not from a fresh look at the measures — the valuation already claimed them:
- Lines — the valuation's lines: each measured item, each variation and each daywork sheet.
- Subtotal — this period's gross.
- Retention withheld — the retention for this period, taking it to Net, the amount applied.
- Tax — on the amount applied, by your Document settings or the client's own rule.
- Amount payable — less any deduction the client withholds.
- Period — the valuation's period. The client's standing order reference is quoted as the PO number.
Above the totals it prints the cumulative position:
- Application no. 3 · VAL-12-003
- Gross value to date
- Previously applied
- This period
- Retention held to date, with the contract's percentage
- Retention this period
- Amount applied this period
- Amount certified — only if the valuation had been certified when the application was raised.

Check the draft, Issue it, and send it. Back on the valuation, the button now reads Open APP-0003 and takes you to it.
A valuation has one live application. To raise another — to correct it, say — void the first; Maliru refuses a second while one stands.
From measures
On Commercial › Measures, choose Select, tick the approved measures and choose Create invoice. In the Create document dialog, set Document type to Application for payment. Everything else works as for an invoice — see Raising an invoice from approved measures. If all the measures are on one contract that holds retention, the application withholds it.
This route has no cumulative block: it claims the work you ticked and nothing else. Use it for clients who want an application rather than an invoice but do not certify cumulative valuations. To make it the usual type, set it under Document settings › Numbering › Document type — or for one client, as the Document type under Clients › Billing.
Measures billed either way show Added to an application for payment in their Activity.
Showing the evidence
Choose the Grouped with evidence layout — when you create the document, on Edit draft, or as your default in Document settings › Design — and the application prints the photos attached to each measure as an appendix after the lines. For a client who pays against evidence, the claim and its proof go in one file.
After it is issued
An application is owed like an invoice. It can be emailed, flagged when overdue, marked paid, voided or credited — see Emailing a document and chasing overdue invoices and Marking paid, voiding, reopening and crediting an invoice.
Marking the valuation paid and marking its application paid are separate steps: do both, so the valuation and your client statement agree.
