Supervisors and managers on the phone

Which view a phone opens in, how to switch between the field app and the office, and what Any job needs.

On a phone, Maliru has two faces: the field app (Today, Work, Capture, Chat, Me) and the office workspace with its full navigation. Which one you open in depends on your access, and anyone who manages can switch.

Which view you open in

On a phone:

  • Field workers always get the field app.
  • Supervisors open in the field app — they are on site, so Capture and Today come first.
  • Owners and office admins open in the office workspace.
  • Custom access opens in the office if it includes management permissions, and in the field app if not.

On a computer, owners, office admins, supervisors and custom access with management permissions open in the office workspace, and can still choose the field view there. Field workers, and custom access without management permissions, get the field app on a computer too, drawn phone-sized in the middle of the screen, with no office view to switch to.

Switching

  • From the field app: Me › cog › Admin view. It is there for owners, office admins, supervisors, and custom access with management permissions.
  • From the office: the account menu › Field view, on a phone or a computer.

On a computer the field app appears phone-sized in the middle of the screen, with Today, Work, Capture, Chat and Me along the bottom, exactly as your team sees it. Anything you open stays inside the phone, which makes it good for showing someone the app while you share your screen. A bar at the top says You're in field view, with Switch to Admin view to go back.

Your choice is remembered on that phone or computer, after a restart or a refresh, until you switch back or sign out. Everything you are allowed to see is the same in both views; they just lay it out differently. Approving timesheets and managing the schedule happen in the office view. A lone worker alarm can be answered from either: in the field app, tapping the alarm notification opens the lone worker board if you hold Manage lone worker, which supervisors added from now on get by default.

Capturing against any job

In the field app, Capture › Your work lists your own assignments. Owners and anyone with the Manage jobs permission — which the Supervisor profile includes — also get Any job, under Something else: "Today's jobs first, then every job in the workspace."

Capture, step one, for a supervisor: Any job under Something else

Any job opens Find a job: search by Job reference, title or client, and narrow with Today and Workstream. Today's jobs come first under TODAY, then OTHER JOBS; the first 50 matches show. See Capturing photos, forms and defects on site.

Find a job: TODAY and OTHER JOBS, with the Today and Workstream chips

Manage schedule on its own is not enough. It lets you plan and publish work, but a capture against somebody else's job needs Manage jobs.

The same rule applies to scheduled forms. When a form due on Today asks for Any job, owners and Manage jobs holders get the search; everyone else chooses from their own assignments for the next 14 days.

Your workstreams still apply

Supervisors usually see only the workstreams they manage. That limit follows you into both views: Any job only finds jobs in your workstreams, and the office lists only show theirs. See Workstream scope.

Tip: if you supervise on site most days, stay in the field app and use Admin view only for office jobs such as approvals. Capture, forms and your own clock are quicker there.
